Todd Shelar is a guitarist, music instructor and composer based in Baltimore, MD. He's been playing and studying guitar for over twenty years and has been teaching for over 15 years. Todd earned his degree in classical guitar performance from Frostburg State University in 2005 after studying with renowned guitarist and pedagogue, Scott Elliott for 5 years. He continued his guitar studies for 3 years with legendary DC/Baltimore area jazz guitarist and teacher Paul Wingo. Todd has taken master classes with the Brazilian Guitar Quartet and in the summer of 2017 studied classical guitar with renowned guitarists and teachers Rene Izquierdo and Matthew McAllister at the Camino Guitar Workshop in Carrion de los Condes, Spain.
Todd currently studies with classical guitar master, Troy King who heads the classical guitar department at Towson University.
Todd's music experience is wide ranging, having played guitar in jazz ensembles, classical guitar ensembles, mixed instrument classical chamber groups, traditional folk groups, original funk, punk, rock, experimental, instrumental and indie bands as well as writing his own solo music and performing solo classical guitar compositions.
Specializing in classical and fingerstyle guitar Todd's repertoire includes music from the Rennaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern eras as well as various world, folk, jazz and popular instrumental solo guitar pieces. Todd is available to provide music for your wedding, art event, private party or other special event.
Todd actively composes and performs music with his original solo project Pergola. Original, acoustic and electric fingerstyle guitar with occasional accompaniment influenced by the American-Primitive guitar players, impressionism, minimalism and various folk and world music traditions.
Teaching is equally important to Todd as being a student and a performer of music. He currently maintains a teaching studio of 50-60 students per week at Mike's Music in Ellicott City, MD where he has taught since 2008. Todd's students range in age from 5 to 80 years old and he is experienced in teaching students of all levels. Todd aims to help students achieve their musical goals and to help define them if necessary. He teaches most styles of guitar as well as beginner electric bass, cello and ukulele. Lessons are tailored to the students needs and interests and he loves to connect with people of all walks of life through the power music.
